Van der graaf generator. Also, I don't understand why you try to find in Hammill's lyrics some "poetry". The poet and Hammill are disconnected from the bulk of the earthlings, but not in the same way. Hammill is far more pessimistic than poets in general.

Vocalist and chief songwriter Peter Hammill’s lengthy and elaborate but thrillingly untamed and spiky compositions, full of churning riffs and brutal dynamics, tapped into something darker and more primitive than anything you could have found amid ELP’s virtuoso showing off or Yes’s quasi-spiritual opulence  . The band’s 13th studio album, Do Not Disturb, released in September, is a fervently experimental affair, full of jaw-dropping moments of angular fury and exquisite quiet, not to mention another typically startling display of Hammill’s extraordinary multi-octave range.

As for Van Der Graaf's frontman Peter Hammill, he is the greatest anti-star of rock; the theatrical leader of a british showmanship that gave us Gabriel, Bowie and Rotten. Wrongly bracketed with the posh prog of Yes, ELP and Genesis, VDGG really just went further out there than their peers. From The Independent On Sunday (ABC section), April 24th 2005: Present Virgin "It's 29 years since their last album together, but Peter Hammill's prog pioneers can still vandalise the ears like nobody else.

Hammill's solo career has coexisted with Van der Graaf Generator's activities. The band was offered a contract by Mercury Records in 1968, that only Hammill signed. When Van der Graaf Generator broke up in 1969 he wanted to record his first solo album. In the summer of 1969 Hammill had a residency at The Lyceum and played weekly solo concerts there. This is an album by Peter Hammill, released on his Fie! label in 1998. There is a large variety in the compositions, ranging from the minimalism of the final song, "The Light Continent", to the rough, almost Nadir-like sound of "Always is Next", the complex "Unrehearsed" and the ballad "Since the Kids". Peter Hammill performed the song "Unrehearsed" live many times. Nightman" can be heard on the live-album Veracious (2006). If You Haven't Got It Yet. Headlong Stretch I) Up Ahead. Headlong Stretch II) Continental Drift.
