Smells Like Nirvana" is a parody of Nirvana's song "Smells Like Teen Spirit", written and performed by "Weird Al" Yankovic; it was released both as a single and as part of Yankovic's Off the Deep End album in April 1992. Smells Like Nirvana" was written during a three-year career low for Yankovic after the financial failure of his film UHF, but captured the quickly-rising popularity of grunge and Nirvana's success.

Smells Like Teen Spirit" is a song by American rock band Nirvana. It is the opening track and lead single from the band's second album, Nevermind (1991), released on DGC Records. Smells Like Teen Spirit" was Nirvana's biggest hit, placing high on music industry charts around the world in 1991 and 1992. The unexpected success propelled Nevermind to the top of the charts at the start of 1992, an event often marked as the point where grunge entered the mainstream.

Cobain did not begin to write Smells Like Teen Spirit until a few weeks before recording started on Nirvana’s second album, Nevermind, in 1991. When he first presented the song to his bandmates, it comprised just the main riff and the chorus vocal melody, which bassist Krist Novoselic dismissed at the time as ridiculous. And Dave playing a drum beat. Cobain came up with the song’s title when his friend Kathleen Hanna, at the time the lead singer of the riot grrrl band Bikini Kill, wrote Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit on his wall. Since they had been discussing anarchism, punk rock, and similar topics, Cobain interpreted the slogan as having a revolutionary meaning. What Hanna actually meant, however, was that Cobain smelled like the deodorant Teen Spirit, which his then-girlfriend Tobi Vail wore.

Smells Like Teen Spirit. Main line: Riff: 2x w/o distortion. D B Chew your meat for you pass it back and forth In a passionate kiss, from my mouth to yours. A5 G5 F because I like you. With eyes so dialted I've become your pupil You've taught me everything with a poison apple The water is so yellow, I'm a healthy student Indebted and so grateful. Vacuum out the fluids. Truth covered in security I can't let you smother me I'd like to but it wouldn't work Trading off and taking turns I don't regret a thing.

That's what 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was all about: The mass mentality of conformity. The video was a huge hit on MTV. The concept was "Pep Rally from Hell," and it was shot at Culver City Studios in California on August 17, 1991, directed by Samuel Bayer, who was a 1987 graduate of the New York City School of Visual Arts. Weird Al Yankovic did a parody of this called "Smells Like Nirvana. He shot his video in the same gym with the same janitor, but in his video, the janitor was wearing a tutu. The album cover shows a baby swimming toward a dollar bill. Cobain and Nirvana bass player Krist Novoselic had seen a documentary on underwater birth and wanted to use that image on the cover. Pictures of babies being born underwater were too gross, so they hired a photographer to take some underwater shots during a water babies class.

Complex article about the story behind Smells Like Teen Spirit, gear, amp settings and used guitar techniques. Cobain began to work on this song a few weeks before recording started on Nirvana's second album, Nevermind, in 1991. When he showed the song to his bandmates for the first time, it had only the main riff and the chorus vocal melody, which Krist Novoselic dismissed at the time as "ridiculous. In response, Cobain made the band play the riff for "an hour and a half. Later Novoselic recalled that after playing the riff repeatedly, he came to the idea to slow it down and Dave Grohl started playing a drum beat.

The packaging on this CD is fantastic. However, the release is highly edited.

If you can find it,as good as it gets as far as early Bleach era recordings go. Even a very loud heckler can't dampen the complete awesomeness of this show. Incredible versions of Dive, Sappy and Negative Creep. The full show with soundcheck can be found on the CD "Bleach of the U-4".

Generally a great show to be bootleged but this pressing could've sounded better and lacks "Help Me, I'm Hungry". This was recorded by a radio station after all. It's a nice LP to have but there are better releases of this show out there. The drunken banter of the audience with mainly Krist is top notch.

I didn't purchase this (hoping to find a copy in a local shop one day), but looking at the track listing, they cut off right before "Negative Creep", meaning that they just cut off the end of whatever length didn't fit and didn't put in the effort to work about the tape and trim out the portions that have large chunks of dead air in them. A lot of bootlegging companies generally do that when they're trying to fit as much material onto a single LP, but it's clear these guys were either strapped for time producing this release, or they just didn't care enough to do that (which is a shame because this show has great versions of "Negative Creep" and "Blew" and without a doubt the best version of "Help Me I'm Hungry", but they were at the end of the show, so they were trimmed off). How I would have done it if I was making this album, I would have only cut out the encore break Between "Blew" and "Help Me", which is about 8 minutes long (and only consists of dead air, random cheers from the audience, and Kurt introducing Tad Doyle) and would have cut the 62 minute long tape down to about 54 Minutes, making it entirely possible to fit All of the songs from the show onto the vinyl. That way, you'd get the whole bundle of songs and you'd get one of the most uneventful parts of the tape omitted. As is, it looks like a good quality boot and I've heard this show before and it's top notch (one of the best ways to hear early live nirvana), but it's a shame that they couldn't have put a better effort into how they added the songs to the album instead of just trimming off the end.

This disc and "Trick Or Treat" are two of the most amazing Nirvana live sets I'v heard, both for their excellent track listings and the amazing sound quality. I believe this is a soundboard recording and it shows. Includes a live version of the early song "Help Me", possibly with Tad on guitar (Kurt: "you only have to learn 4 notes!")...

This was recorded by local radio, thus the great sound.
