Closed For Winter 'Brittle Love' is a suite of songs scratched together from the teary depths of a computerised pop dream. From a few raggedy Technicolor melodies bloom luscious strings, xylophones, and drum machines. Joe Snape makes precise music in bright colours with the help of electricity. He grew up in England’s Birmingham with a glockenspiel mallet for a dummy, and wants very much to make strange songs that delight. He is particularly committed to the kind of sounds that, if they were people, would be the last picked for sides in a game of schoolyard football. He lives in Berlin, and is happily myopic.
Introducing Brittle Love by JOE SNAPE – a Berlin local with a Birmingham origin, released on a wonderful Wedding/London label called Slip. This is self described instrumental pop-dreamscapes held together with sticky-tape. The synthesisers twitch and flicker, much like the giant, audio-triggered, lightbulb spider contraption that SNAPE performs on stage with.
Brittle Love is pieced together from various pieces that come together to create some heavy-hearted electronica that paints a vivid picture of sonic experimentation with its roots in neo-classical folk music. An encapsulating release from this collective and a step sideways from previous limited run CDRs.
Instrument builder, concert organiser, purveyor of electricity and all of the music.
Brittle Love is a suite of songs scratched together from the teary depths of a computerised pop dream. But something’s not quite right: you can almost hear the sticky-tape holding together the synthesisers, the vocals are forever slipping away from the beat. This is pin-point electronic music put together with Early Learning Centre scissors, a pot of PVA glue, and a page of Lonely Hearts classifieds ripped from a regional newspaper. Joe Snape makes precise music in bright colours with the help.
Album: Joe Snape, Brittle Love. Joe Snape is a friend of mine and released this album recently.
Brittle Love, Tired Music. I heard Birmingham artist Joe Snape perform last year at a SOUNDkitchen event and was suitably impressed, so I was pleased when two short releases from him appeared this year on the labels Slip and Keshhhhh, respectively. The Slip record, Brittle Love, is a collection of short, melody-driven pieces, with a mix of intricate upbeat rhythms and mellower (yet no less complex) drifts. The music has a wonderfully childlike sense of fun and imagination, with attention racing from one gleaming fragment to another as if trying to take in the whole world in one breath.

Joe Bates and the merry Filthy Lucre lot invited power-Mancunians ACM and yours truly to do our live-typed text piece from 2015, Fleck Flob Flop at the newly opened Redon club in Bethnal Green, and it was great. Thanks very much guys – your sound engineer was one of the Greatest Of All Time. It’s tentatively titled Joyrobix, and will be touring all of Europe and North America in spring 2019. With my little sister, which is the most exciting prospect.
