Ludwig van Beethoven composed his Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, in 1806. Its first performance by Franz Clement was unsuccessful and for some decades the work languished in obscurity, until revived in 1844 by Joseph Joachim. Since then it has become one of the best-known violin concertos. Beethoven had previously written a number of pieces for violin and orchestra.

The concerto was innovative in that it far outclassed its predecessors in terms of length and grandeur, and the orchestral tutti sections are unusually expansive for its time. Ever since Joseph Joachim's revival of the piece, Ludwig van Beethoven's violin concerto has become a standard part of the repertoire for every aspiring violinist. The concerto was innovative in that it far outclassed its predecessors in terms of length and grandeur, and the orchestral tutti sections are unusually expansive for its time. In contrast to its current popularity, however, the concerto was despised by the critics at its premiere
