Aromanticism is the debut studio album by American singer-songwriter Moses Sumney. It was released on September 22, 2017 by Jagjaguwar. It is a concept album about "lovelessness as a sonic dreamscape" that "seeks to interrogate the idea that romance is normative and necessary. The record was written and produced by Sumney, with assistance from numerous musicians. It features new versions of two previously-released songs, "Plastic" and "Lonely World".

Aromanticism is the triumphant debut from Moses Sumney, released on September 22, 2017 through Jagjaguwar. A month prior to the album’s release, Moses took to Tumblr to pen a Prose-Poem Essay unraveling the project. Moses explains that Aromanticism is a concept album about lovelessness as a sonic dreamscape that seeks to interrogate the idea that romance is normative and necessary. This isn’t protest music, however, as much as it is process music.

The debut album from Moses Sumney is a soulful, cosmic embrace of aloneness. The concept of aromanticism-the incapacity or unwillingness to reciprocate romantic feelings or love-runs throughout Sumney’s fragile, existential lyrics: Broken, disappointed, and isolated, Sumney is like Melville’s forlorn Bartleby staring somberly out the window into the void-or, perhaps, a 21st-century version of Tina Turner whispering What’s love got to do with it?

Aromanticism ‎(LP, Album, Club, Bla). referencing Aromanticism, LP, Album, JAG308. A pleasant surprise from JAGJAGUAR. The last record I got from this label, (Bon Iver 22 A Million) was one of the worst pressings Ive heard, but this record sounds wonderful, with little to no surface noise. A very interesting artist my son turned me on to. Radiohead meets Al Green. Reply See 4 replies Notify me 1 Helpful.

With Aromanticism, Moses Sumney creates a harmonious world in which he speaks from a position that isn't often recognized. Sumney approaches the complexities of relationships, power structures and an inability to experience romantic love with a quiet, powerful confidence. The instrumentation here is nice, and Moses Sumney has such a fantastic and giant voice that it can break doors down, but much of this album is just sort of plodding along at a medium pace. It's not that it's god awful, it's just lacking this energy that I know Moses Sumney can provide. It's a good record, don't get me wrong. It oozes sleek, graceful melodies like no-ones business.

The singular talents of Moses Sumney were already apparent in a couple of early EPs and guest spots with Solange and Sufjan Stevens, but his stellar debut album, Aromanticism, still comes as a slow-motion shock. First of all there is his concept of "aromantic," defined by Sumney as someone incapable of experiencing romantic love, coupled with the struggle to fit into a world where love is almost an imposition and its negation an aberration.

Moses Sumney – Aromanticism. The electro-soul singer-songwriter's debut is one of the most therapeutic albums of the year. To be fair, Sumney’s ability to create an album such as this one was to be expected. The Los Angeles t has been stunning audiences for years. His early days of singing in coffee shops in 2014 paved the way for word-of-mouth fanfare, eventually earning him spots singing behind Sufjan Stevens and Solange. Yet, while his blend of electro-soul, bare-bones folk, and groove-driven minimalism never fails to impress live, he seems hard-pressed to settle on recorded versions.

Excellent package on this one from VMP. The record is dead quiet in terms of background noise and the level of detail is impressive.

I’m like you. Hands off policy when it comes to Jagjaguar (and a lot of US labels) but this surprised me tremendously. Perfect pressing, and it’s a quiet record which needed it. Flawless, and thick solid jacket as well
  • Steel_Blade
I did actually order a copy (knowing that I'd be able to return it) ... and I think I'll keep it. While it's not as pristine as was said here, it's still a notable step-up from previous shit pressings. The noise floor is pleasently low - as is absolutely necessary for such a quite record. But there are a few annoying clicks that shouldn't be there on factory fresh records. Hopefully cleaning it will improve on those issues.
  • Authis
I know what you mean. Would really like this album but have also previously sworn off Jagjaguar pressings. What to do, what to do....
  • LivingCross
wow, jagjaguwar finally got its act together? might I have to reconsider my "never-buy-vinyl-from-jagjaguwar" rule?
  • Steel balls
my record of the year, such a superb sublime jazzy soul album... i missed the limited edition but the regular vinyl release is perfect in every way
  • Vushura
Mine's Japanese CD of this album and it comes with one bonus track ("Latchkey Kid"). Catalogue number JAG308J
  • Kifer
What idiot paid 89 euros for this?!? And from a seller that didn't even have it in hand yet. Wow... should've just waited a few more days haha
  • Sharpbrew
Hahaha it's still available from VMP...but now it will cost you $16US.
  • Road.to sliver
How does it sound?, is it worth the VMP copy?
  • Kare
I'm on my second VMP copy, as they sent a replacement for this first due to package damage, dishing and noise/clicking between the two colors. Second is better, but there is still an obvious noise floor increase on the white portion and still some clicking. Packaging looks great and the bonuses are cool, if you care about stuff like that, but if you are looking the best sound I would just go for the standard black copy. I'll be trading my VMP to my local for the standard issue, as I love this album and it deserves to be heard cleanly. YMMVUPDATE: Traded in for the standard issue and it is a significant improvement. Quieter, clearer and more dynamic, even. I would say the VMP is worth it if you like seeing two different colors spin around. If you like music go with the standard.

It sounds fantastic, that being said I haven't heard any other pressing to compare so hopefully somebody else can chime in.
  • Zeks Horde
Got this reply from JJ last week and got a download code for mp3s."So sorry about that!We are aware of the issue and want to make sure you have the correct version. We have just received the corrected CDs and are shipping them out to stores as we speak. You should be able to return the CD and get a good copy in the next week or so."
  • Flas
Anyone elses copy of the cd has like 10 seconds of silence after 3:12 mins on the second track??I had two copies with the same problem.....
  • Kezan
The same here! It seems to be a production error...
  • Jediathain
Same problem here, so is JJ replacing copies for people who bought one?
  • Jozrone
I've had two copies now exactly the same. I contacted Jagjaguwar and they said they are aware of the issue and they've got a corrected version coming.
  • Xirmiu
Yep, same problem here. I posted a message about it on Jagjaguwar's Facebook -- I'm hoping they're aware of the issue and planning a repress.
  • Kupidon
A terrific debut album, my only complaint is that it should have been longer! Amazing clarity and depth of sound on this pressing and the gatefold is very sturdy. Very pleased with this release.
  • Getaianne
It comes with 16 pages book, it is 8 pages with two sides :) and the album is great, yeah, also the cover is solid and thick, sadly no anti static inner sleeves, but overall a great effort!
  • bass
It's 16 pages, same as the Vinyl Me, Please edition.
  • August
Mine has an 8 page book. not sure where 24 pages came from.
  • ZEr0
Does it actually come with the 24-page book, as stated in the notes here?
  • Jarortr
