The Hennessys originally had three members: Frank Hennessy, Dave Burns and Paul Powell. Nowadays, they usually appear as Frank (guitar, main vocals and composer), Dave (mandolin and vocals), and Iolo Jones (fiddle). In 1966, along with Dave Burns, he won Cardiff City Council’s Spotlight on Youth competition, paving the way for them both and Paul Powell to turn professional as the folk group Hennessys. They moved to Ireland where they honed their skills on the thriving folk music circuit. After taking a break from music in the seventies to concentrate on his family, Frank Hennessy was asked to present a radio programme in 1978, and has been a regular ever since.
In their sophomore album, The Road Miles adopt an almost cinematic approach to their sound, transferring the auditor straight to the heart of that very desert. Here, every twist and turn of a desert travelogue can be experienced through music: the wearing route, the mortal hazards, the otherworldly delusions. Skillfully maneuvering from electrifying blues to nostalgic americana and explosive heavy psych to wistful spoken word, the band perfectly captures the feeling of being adrift in such vast wastelands, in a psychedelic loop of fantasy and death. I'm walking that road for 600 miles I'm after this shadow this man dressed in black The structure is present and shades my existence And I will just live for this cause. The sand from this desert is burning my eyes The villagers call me and sing "Hey Jude" The world is just ruins the ancients have left us And I've found a lunatic train.
