True, the last true Soft Machine album was Bundles, because Mike Ratledge was still present, but by then he was the only original member left. With the next album, Softs, it's clear who is in control and that was Karl Jenkins. To me, post Robert Wyatt Soft Machine does not always get the most respect, many felt they became more of a generic fusion group, which I couldn't agree on.

Softs is the ninth studio album by the jazz rock band Soft Machine, released in 1976. John Etheridge replaced Allan Holdsworth on guitar shortly after the release of the previous album, Bundles, and Alan Wakeman, cousin of keyboardist Rick Wakeman, took over saxophone duties from Karl Jenkins. Karl would play keyboards exclusively from this point onward.

On Softs more than ever before, Soft Machine was Jenkins' band; he composed fully seven of the LP's 11 tracks, making the album a vehicle for his own artistic conception.

Of course, SOFT MACHINE being SOFT MACHINE, personel changes occured once again with the departure of ALLAN HOLDSWORTH after just one album being replaced by JOHN ETHERIDGE. Also KARL JENKINS gave up the horns and concentratred to play the keyboards. ALAN WAKEMAN was hired to take over tenor and soprano saxes. Most importantly, as widely expected considering its shrinking role in the band, former leader MIKE RATLEDGE left discreetly. He is still present on SOFTS, but only on 2 tracks and the worst is that he is listed as . uest!!! MIKE RATLEDGE guesting! in his own band he created and led!!!.

Mike Ratledge had gone along with his distinctive keyboards and Robert Wyatt has long been in a wheelchair by the time this Soft Machine album appeared. All the trademarks that had endeared the Softs to fusion lovers and the Canterbury scene had gone. There were no original members, although Jenkins, Marshall and Babbington had been in the band for a while. Not only that, but there was a new guitarist, John Etheridge, "sellout" was the cry. To be fair, this version of the Softs had little in common with the band that produced the incredible "Third".
