I witnessed a Planetary Assault Systems live act in Belgrade on November 11th 2017. It was the first time after a long while that I'd see Luke Slater play live. Needless to say, he slaughtered the venue. But, my God, hearing Surface Noise, after I only wish I could remember how long, through a towering stack of Funktion-Ones, made me realize, yet again, the monstrous proportions of his production might. This tune, has not only withstood the tooth of time, it surpassed it. The simplicity of the swing makes its funk eternal. The bass line is luminous. Planetary Assault Systems - Surface Noise 10:30. The lead synth is almost like a distant dentist drill. Irritating, but in that good, old fashioned, make you crawl all over the wall way. Persistent, buzzing and down-low-dirty mischievous. It literary made the place blow up. The crowd went nuts. Even kids who were not even born when this first hit the shelves. Luke Slater is one of the best that ever did it. This, along with two dozen tons of tracks he's made, is a perfect example of why.Evergreen techno goodness. This a highly indispensable record, but that goes for the vast majority of P.A.S. output.Once I got back to my home city, I proudly took the record out, placed it under the needle, and let it rip. Windows open. Froze my bones off. Did not matter. My neighbors had to hear it as well. My civil duty was done. Right there.

"Gruve" is very similar to "Overseyah" by The Advent which was released a little earlier.
  • Gashakar
Surface Noise @The End in London, summer of 96'. Saturday night- say no more
  • Deorro
Good times - I really miss The End - the current generation of people will never know how good it was back in those days.

my personal favorite is the (almost too short) FUNK ELECTRIChypnotizing syncopated ostinato!Liryc Nonstop
  • SkroN
To me Gruve is the best Luke has ever done. Those hi hats man!
  • Xirmiu
Mind-blowing, subtlety reigns supreme. Among his best.
  • Vetitc
a great track "surface noise" one of mine favorite tracks to mix!!

"Surface Noise" is my favorite track from Luke Slater. The groove is like a pendulum, swinging back and forth as you listen to the abrasive lead synth.

Even though it is still a distinctive P.A.S. sound, this one is much more liquid sounding than the rest of the series.Gruve, maybe the most so, gives us view to forgotten marshes or another flooded scenery under a grey, grey sky.Surface Noise is more typical: an alarm signal stuck on the same frequency that simply won't stop. However, the flowing bassdrum and bassline give the impression that it all happens in an submerged laboratory.Funk Electric, as the title suggests, is more on the usual P.A.S. tip.An interesting release, though not as aggressive and dancefloor-friendly as the other ones.
