Ashes is the fourth full-length album by the Norwegian band Tristania. The album registers a change in the band's musical style, leaving out the choirs and initiating a heavier sound, with a focus on darker lyrics and the pure vocals of Vibeke Stene. This album is the only one Kjetil Ingebrethsen performed harsh vocals on. All music and lyrics by Tristania, except where noted. Libre" – 4:30 (lyrics by Kjartan Hermansen). The Wretched" – 7:00 (lyrics by Hermansen).

Soyuz Music, Steamhammer. SPV 085-99202 CD. Russia.

Ashes", like any other Tristania album, contains three vocalists: a harsh male vocalist (Kjetil Ingebrethsen), a clean male vocalist (Østen Bergøy) and a female vocalist (Vibeke Stene). However, Vibeke doesn't appear as often as she does on "World of Glass. In fact, there are 2 tracks in which Vibeke's vocals are non-existent ("The Wretched" and "Circus"). Ashes" is clearly the heaviest Tristania album to date. Cutting back from the frequent use of keyboards and making more use of guitars (acoustic included). It also lacks choirs and operatic vocals from Vibeke Stene.

Much to the delight of their fans, Norway's Tristania continued to prosper after the departure of guiding songwriter Morten Veland, simply retooling the group's lineup and shifting creative responsibilities to show no obvious ill effects with their next effort, 2001's World of Glass. Then, following a troublingly long break from action, the group returned even more confidently with 2005's Ashes - the first release for new label SPV.

Ashes is the newest effort from this 7 piece band from Norway. The CD also has a US release with one bonus song and a music video for the track Equilibrium, and a different CD cover of female vocalist Vebeke Stene on the cover (see Revolver’s March 2006 issue for more details). Libre starts off the album with some quick, scattered riffs and ferocious growls before evolving into a common tune to that of doomsters that like old Katatonia. Vebeke Stene comes in a little over a minute with her operatic, haunting vocals, slowing the song down a bit before it picks up into some wicked riffs as the band shows a more progressive side to them.
