This reissue of the Dial jazz sessions is welcome because it complements Mosaic's 1990 release The Dean Benedetti Charlie Parker (Mosaic Records MD7-129).

Except for two outlier sessions, all the Dial jazz recordings were made in a 21-month period between Feb. 5, 1946 and Dec. 17, 1947. Much of it is enjoyable, even admirable, but Dial Records will always be remembered for its immortal Parker recordings, every bit as essential as the groundbreaking Savoy sessions and definitely better than the valuable but inconsistent Verve sides to come. For many of his Dial sessions, Parker’s trumpet foil was the 19-to-21-year-old Miles Davis

RECORDED 0. Title Complete Dial Modern Jazz Sessions. Author Various Artists. Supplier Mosaic Box Sets. Each Mosaic project falls into at least one of three categories. Some sets we know will be significant because of the demand for a hard-to-find jazz artist or the unique scope of a Mosaic box. Some sets we bring out because, popular or not, the music must be heard. And sometime. e just love it. Want it. Have to have it. Which brings us to The Complete Dial Masters. As the saying goes, check all the boxes. As most jazz fans know, among the most important records to hear in your life are Charlie Parker's Dial Sessions, recorded between 1946 and 1947.

By Paula Edelstein Dec 29, 2014. Latest On AXS. Red Rocks Amphitheatre 2019 June schedule and event calendar.

Which brings us to The Complete Dial Masters. They are classics with Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Howard McGee, Wardell Gray, J. J. Johnson, Duke Jordan, Teddy Edwards, Teddy Wilson, Errol Garner, Tommy Potter, Max Roach and others. But Dial was way more than Parker. The invaluable session by session analyses are told by the collective efforts of Tony Williams, Mark Gardner and Max Harrison with you are there input and reminiscences by Russell informing each write-up.

A 1946 Dial jazz recording session with Lucky Thompson on tenor saxophone strikes a mature ear differently than it did a young on. Late last year, when Mosaic Records issued The Complete Dial Modern Jazz Sessions, a nine-CD boxed set, I re-encountered that master take of Ornithology for the first time in a while. Every note rang familiar, but Thompson’s solo struck me as a revelation: 35 seconds of brave and gallant intrigue, a pocket marvel of insinuative harmony and spry syncopation.

Jazz Classics brought out their own version of the anthology in 1996, and Stash followed suit in 2004, as did Definitive that same year with the Savoy material woven into the chronology.
