A series of 6 double CD live recordings, together with advance samplers of Frank Zappa & MOI works, containing a total of 182 tracks. In Frank Zappa's words; "This series took 20 years to put together.

When this series took off, Zappa made an album with sample songs, which looked just like Volume 1, but it said "SAMPLER" instead of "VOLUME 1" on the cover. Some resources list it as having a short-lived CD release, but as we've never seen a copy, we now are pretty sure it doesn't exist. Engineered to retrofit all six volumes of FZ's massive retrospective, known the world over as You Can't Do That on Stage Anymore.

The album was released through Barking Pumpkin/Zappa Records in April 1988 on double vinyl and cassette tape. As of now (August 2014) it has not yet been released on CD. When the Stage series took off, Zappa made an album with sample songs, which looked just like Volume 1, but it said SAMPLER instead of VOLUME 1 on the cover. Frank Zappa designed his six-volume series of live albums You Can’t Do That on Stage Anymore with the CD in mind; each volume was a two-CD set, and each disc ran an hour or so. But the CD was still an emerging format in the late ’80s, so he also compiled this 81-minute sampler, released only on cassette and as a double-LP set, concurrently with the first volume in 1988. It gives a good sense of the series as a whole.
