That contact would explain why Il Sant'Alessio (1632) sounds like a Monteverdi opera. Its expressive recitatives, melodically gratifying set pieces, mixture of serious and comic elements, and the complex psychology of its characters make it a piece that should appeal to opera fans who love L'incoronazione di Poppea. Il Sant'Alessio was the first opera based on historical events, the life and death of a fifth century saint, rather than on mythology. William Christie leads Les Arts Florissants in a splendid performance that's notable for its theatrical pacing and impassioned musicality. The soloists are consistently excellent, singing with pure tone, agility, and breathtaking dramatic intensity.

William Christie leads Les Arts Florissants in a splendid performance that's notable for its theatrical pacing and impassioned musicality. Among the fine cast, soprano Patricia Petibon as the Saint, soprano Maryseult Wieczorek as Roma and Religion, and bass Clive Bayley as the Devil deserve special recognition.

A demon tempts Alessio to reveal his true identity and so end his family’s grief, but an angel keeps him on the sacred path. The dying Alessio leaves a letter explaining the truth and an angelic chorus bids his family to rejoice rather than mourn, since he has been received into heaven. This strange, solemn and elevated story is leavened with comic scenes in the commedia dell’arte vein, adding to the rich musico-dramatic variety of the entire opera.

That is, astonishingly, what Les Arts Florissants does so artfully in this recording; every ornamental flourish you hear has been improvised by the individual musician. Landi's Il Sant'Alessio was commissioned by Urban VIII and performed in 1632, with maximum opulence, in the Barberini palace in Rome, a building designed by Bernini. William Christie has conscientiously attempted to recreate Il San'Alessio with maximum historical authenticity. Above all, there are no women in this production.
