Mozart - Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Schäfer, Petibon, Bostridge, Paton, Ewing, Löw, Les Arts Florissants, Christie. Not only is Christine Schäfer's Konstanze handsomely sung, but for once we feel her rage in "Martern aller Arten," and not at the aria's difficulties. The secondary couple, Pedrillo and Blonde, are sung by Iain Paton and Patricia Petibon, respectively, and they are nice foils for the other two: Paton is impetuous and Petibon is coy where their betters are thoughtful and serious.
Les Arts Florissants, William Christie. Schäfer (Konstanze) has spectacular high notes, but can lack vehemence, and Bostridge (Belmonte) is mellifluous but slightly prosaic. Lovely orchestral playing. Christine Schäfer (Konstanze), Ian Bostridge (Belmonte), Alan Ewing (Osmin), Patricia Petibon (Blonde), Iain Paton (Pedrillo) & Jurg Low (Selim, Bassa).

Die) Entführung aus dem Serail, '(The) Abduction from the Seraglio'. This ebullient, beautifully co-ordinated reading began life in a production at Strasbourg at the end of 1995 when Andrew Clark reported in Opera that ‘rarely have Mozart’s exotic textures sounded so feather-light, or the instrumental obbligatos so naturally in context’. Christie sets ‘brisk but flexible tempos, and builds the ensembles into a fever of musical jubilation’.
Christine Schäfer, Patricia Petibon, Ian Bostridge, Alan Ewing, Iain Paton; Les Arts Florissants/William Christie. The singers speak the dialogue, except for Petibon, whose delightfully sung Blonde’s speaking alter ego is curiously humourless. Ewing is a sterling Osmin in the comic mould which Mozart surely intended, complete with inauthentic bottom C in his first aria. The dialogue is severely reduced. Pedrillo’s serenade, sweetly sung by Iain Paton, is integral to the action of the elopement, but here runs uninterrupted for four stanzas (perhaps one too many: a few other numbers are harmlessly cut). Christie has thought through the tempi with care, and although Pedrillo’s aria risks seeming sluggish the.
It was only a matter of time before William Christie got around to recording Mozart"s delightful 1782 singspiel, and the results are very happy indeed. Period instruments are just right for the raucous "Turkish" music Mozart composed for Entführung, and they go very nicely with the light voices Christie has chosen as well. Most successful is the Belmonte of tenor Ian Bostridge, already famous for his lieder singing
