referencing The Wake Of Magellan, CD, Album, SPV 076-74532 CD. After their 1995 concept album 'Dead Winter Dead', which spawned a small radio hit for the band, and the recently-formed Trans-Siberian Orchestra, which also garnered mainstream success, Savatage continue down the route of epic rock operas which would see the band reach new heights of creativity and critical acclaim during the late 90's.

The Wake of Magellan is the tenth studio album released by the American heavy metal band Savatage. The album was released in September 1997 in Europe and Japan, and in April 1998 in the US. It is a concept album and is based on two real life events. The first, the Maersk Dubai incident, occurred just over a year before this album was released when the captain and officers of the ship threw three Romanian stowaways overboard in the middle of the Atlantic.

Lyrics to "The Wake Of Magellan" song by Savatage: As he stood upon the watch deck Looking out onto the sea It would offer no solutions Only silent co. .Columbus and Magellan and De Gama Sailed upon the ocean In a world of ignorance With thoughts so primitive That men were killed. With no more will Than that they simply had the notion But in this world of heartless men This thing they never did. Don't hear it Don't hear it Don't hear it Don't hear it.

Over 15 years into their career, Savatage refused to stay still - if anything, the group continued to improve in the '90s, as their 14th album, The Wake of Magellan, proved. Long ago, the group began fusing heavy metal with progressive rock, but they've rarely recorded a concept album as enthralling as The Wake of Magellan. Employing a fictional character, Hector Del-Fuego Magellan, a supposed descendent of famed explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the band retells two true stories

A great deception! I'm a fan of original Savatage style, classic metal, with Jon Oliva on the vocals.

The Wake Of Magellan is the third album recorded without Christopher Michael Oliva. And surely I can assure that this is the best one. Quite different than Handful Of Rain and something like the better version (with some new things) of Dead Winter Dead. The line-up is still the same from the last record, some changes get out of ideas in lyrics and music. Savatage had pretty much edged themselves into a neat little rut of boring, self indulgent rock opera excess by the time they churned out this album, with little hope of returning. Instrumentally, this is definitely a towering monolith in the metal world, as Savatage are more "prog" here than they ever were.
