Michael Flanders and Donald Swann opened At the Drop of a Hat, a multi-topical "after dinner farrago" on New Year's Eve 1956 at the New Lindsey Theatre in London. It ran for three weeks and then moved to the Fortune Theatre where it prevailed from 1957 to 1959 just two chaps, one of them in a wheel-chair if you please, singing their own songs at the piano" on a heavily curtained stage adorned with a single domestic living room floor lamp

Michael Flanders, introduction to The Gnu, At the Drop of a Hat (1960). As Michael Flanders says, the animal songs made him and his partner Donald Swann famous. As Flanders himself observes in At the Drop of Another Hat (1964), The purpose of satire, it has been rightly said, is to strip off the veneer of comforting illusion and cosy half-truth - and our job, as I see it, is to put it back again. They are satirists, but (usually) lack the aggression of Lehrer, favoring instead satire’s sense of play and a kind of wry, bemused judgment - or, in the case of songs like The Hippopotamus, more whimsy than judgment.

The music-hall team Flanders and Swann included a song about House & Garden in their album "At the Drop of a Hat", which we're delighted to revisit now that an English Heritage blue plaque has been put up to commemorate their residence in Kensington in the 1950s and 60s. Courtesy of English Heritage. From the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, Michael Flanders and Donald Swann, who had been at school and at Oxford together, performed their revues featuring comedic monologues and songs in theatres around London and the country. Highlights from their repertoire include "A Transport of Delight" on the subject of London buses, "The Gasman Cometh", which deals with the tendency of tradesmen to finish jobs by creating jobs for more tradesmen to do, and "Pee Po Belly Bum Drawers" on the juvenility of swearing among the intelligentsia.
