Armand Van Helden was born in Boston in a family of a serviceman that's why there were frequent relocations during his early age. In his childhood and youth a musician-to-be travelled half the world living in Turkey and Netherlands, however, in the 1990s his family returned to Boston and Armand, having acquired skills of a DJ by that time, started to perform in local nightclubs. Being inspired by growing popularity, in 1996 Armand Van Helden released his debut album titled Old School Junkies and immediately after that a compilation of his best hits. One of them, U Don’t Know Me, topped the American charts, became number one in the UK and won music lovers of Canada and Australian continent. Besides this, Armand Van Helden tried his strength as a producer, having established his own label Armed Records.

Forget all the talk of has he or hasn’t he parted company with London Records, the good news is not only has Armand a new single (on his own US imprint), but it’s a double-A side and each are pretty essential. ‘Why Can’t You…’ has already been aired nationally by Tong, although cryptically credited to Ghandi Khan, and features a guitar riff à la Doobie Brothers that’s set to become a staple part of summer’s soundtrack; even the vocoded vocals grow on you with repeated plays. Flip for the darker and altogether more club-friendly ‘I Can Smell U’ – think Thick Dick’s ‘Welcome To The Jungle’ meets a Dave Clarke remix and you’ll be in the right ballpark. Van’s best since ‘You Don’t Know Me’.
