Richard Thompson is surely one of the greatest songwriters and artists never to achieve any measure of commercial fame. However, his high reputation among musicians is unchallenged, and Beat the Retreat is a fine collection of covers of some of Thompson's greatest songs. There are two kinds of successes on this record. The first kind is when artists completely re-envision Thompson's original compositions.

Richard Thompson is an ideal subject for a tribute album. He’s been acknowledged as the most underrated guitarist in rock for so long he’s in danger of losing the title. His songwriting is inspired, both musically and lyrically. If his singing voice is by default the weak leg in the tripod, that only means a band can put their own stamp on it with greater ease. Beat the Retreat was put together by John Chelew, who set out to recruit a wide, wide range of talent. It was important to me to have breadth, he explained, from folky-trad pals like June Tabor and Maddy Prior to rockers like Dinosaur Jr. and Bob Moul. .will have to listen to June & Maddy.
