State of Tennessee Blues offers 18 tracks from the miraculous Memphis Jug Band, all recorded between 1927 and 1929, during the first three years of the group's collective career. Though the band recorded a number of exuberant, jazz-oriented breakdowns, particularly during its post-Depression resurgence, State of Tennessee Blues tends typically toward its more plaintive, slow-dragging moments - dirge-like, whiskey-drenched, and gravelly, invested with the steady rocking rhythms of work and of sex, of the good-times dancing construed as a defense from the blues.

Vol. 2: When the Memphis Jug Band reassembled in September 1928 to cut eight titles for Victor, they began in larky mood.
The Memphis Jug Band recorded Jackson's hit song "Kansas City Blues" twice and performed it on the television program Blues Street in 1958. This is the basic jug band sound that was adopted by other Memphis-area groups, like Gus Cannon's Jug Stompers, Jed Davenport's Beale Street Jug Band and Jack Kelly's South Memphis Jug Band. The band initially played mostly country blues, but its repertoire expanded as new members contributed their own styles. Twenty-eight of the group's commercial recordings from 1927 to 1934 were reissued by Yazoo Records in 1980 on the double album Memphis Jug Band Field recordings. During the folk revival of the 1950s, Shade made several field recordings.
