Let Me Fly is the second album from the latter-day incarnation of Mike + the Mechanics, the one featuring Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar splitting lead vocal duties. By this point, any of Mike Rutherford's lingering prog influences are long gone, leaving a streamlined and polished professional pop group. Even when the pace quickens and the arrangements sparkle, the affair seems subdued and, to that end, Roachford never quite gets the chance to stretch his chops
I don't wanna live without living I don't wanna wear a disguise I don't wanna keep on pretending Just living a lie Every day the pressure is building Every night I'm howling at the moon Feeling like the wolves are just closing in What can I do? So let me fly, let me fly, oh, let me fly If I don't try, I will never know Let me fly, let me fly, oh, let me fly See how far I can go. None of us is born to be prisoners But some of us end up in a cell What if we were born to be a witness Living is the only way to tell

Let Me Fly began to take off as the band toured 2011’s The Road, the first album featuring the current line-up: Rutherford himself (guitar/bass), Luke Juby (keyboards), Gary Wallis (drums), Anthony Drennan (guitar), plus vocalists Andrew Roachford and Tim Howar. The Mechanics hadn’t played live much, so we started to do what I’d done 40 years ago and build a name. The title track, Let Me Fly, performed by Andrew Roachford provided the album’s title and its emotional centre. He had to shave his head for the shoot.
