Oh, Inverted World is the debut studio album by American indie rock band The Shins, released on June 19, 2001 to critical acclaim. Omnibus Records put out an initial run of vinyl distributed by Darla. Sub Pop Records reprinted the vinyl, but the Sub Pop logo only appears on later pressings. The album contains the songs "Caring Is Creepy" and "New Slang," both of which appeared in the 2004 film Garden State.

Oh, Inverted World (CD, Album, RE). Sub Pop Records, Canyon International. The original Omnibus LP of "Oh, Inverted World" is a different mastering to the common Sub Pop LP, but it is in no way superior. The content is identical, but the cutting is very bass-shy and a bit sibilant and distorted.

Hailing from Albuquerque, NM, The Shins sprung from the ashes of Flake/Flakemusic in 1997 (though those previous incarnations date back nearly a decade) – same members, different instruments, different approach.
The Shins' first full-length is a definitive indie rock album of the 2000s not just because of its thoughtful, tuneful songs, but also because of the vivid portrait it painted of indie culture. After the high irony of Pavement and other '90s standard bearers, indie rock began moving into more emotionally forthright territory. Oh, Inverted World is the sound of realizing there's more to life than being a smart-aleck - but also not being ready to open up completely.
Sphagnum Esplanade Lyrics. About Oh, Inverted World. Oh, Inverted World Q&A.
For some have hailed Oh, Inverted World as the next great entry in a long line of clean and carefree pop albums that strings back to the Beach Boys' early surfing days. This is what's meant by "sunny" music: both laid-back and upbeat, with crystalline vocals and lyrics that, while sincere, aren't particularly weighty. Thankfully, the Shins are a little more unpredictable than the summer, with its incessant, oppressive heat. The Shins start showing their real strengths with "Know Your Onion!" which sounds like a 60's British garage band striving for the Kinks and just falling short. The hook is surprisingly deceptive, the occasional childish background vocals are fun without being irritable, and there's even a welcome hint of their previous sound, which comes in the form of a slow, Modest Mouse-like interlude that ends with a patented Guided by Voices guitar lick.
