Album including Album cover Booklet (PDF). Total Runtime01:05:22. Info for Schumann: Dichterliebe, Beethoven & Schubert: Lieder. To medieval musicians, "sweetness" was the ultimate musical attribute. But they never heard Fritz Wunderlich. His was a tenor voice with sweetness to make one swoon and vowels (yes, vowels) for the ages. Hubert Giesen provides an able counterpart at the piano to Wunderlich's cantabile (listen especially to the delicate, extended closing piano solo at Dichterliebe's end). his ringing top A at the end of "Ich grolle nicht" is the most thrilling sound on any "Dichterliebe" recording.

Schumann: 9. Das ist ein Flöten und Geigen. 10. Schumann: 10. Hör' ich das Liedchen klingen Hardly anyone I talk to has even heard of Fritz Wunderlich, and that's sad. His interpretation of these wonderful Lieder by Schumann, Schubert, and Beethoven is simply one of the best out there - right up there with Fischer-Dieskau and Ameling. His range of expression is as impressive as his technique, bringing something unique to each of the songs on this recording and on his recording of "Die Schoene Muellerin.

Fritz Wunderlich, Hubert Giesen. Schumann: Dichterliebe; Schubert, Beethoven: Lieder.

Wunderlich's performance of Schumann's Dichterliebe, recorded live at the 1965 Schwetzingen Festival, was considered by the singer himself to be one of his best interpretations ever. The pianist was Hubert Giesen, one of the most distinguished accompanists of his era. He worked closely with Wunderlich, who was already an international star at the time. This compilation provides a unique overview of Wunderlich's lieder performances – from the start of his career until his tragic and untimely death.
