b. Sidney Selby, 28 July 1931, Hyde County, North Carolina, USA. Selby sang in church as a child and in his mid-teens went with his mother to live in New York City. He was surrounded by music, partly through an aunt who worked at a US army camp where touring swing bands and bop musicians appeared. In the 60s, playing guitar and singing, he recorded a number of singles and toured with artists such as Ben E. King and the Isley Brothers, but despite gaining recognition from his peers it was not until he went to Europe that he began to attract an admiring audience.

Sidney Selby (born July 23, 1931), known as "Guitar Crusher" and formerly as "Bone Crusher", is an American blues singer and guitarist, for many years based in Berlin, Germany. Primarily a singer, billed as "The Big Voice from New York", he also plays guitar and blues harmonica. Selby was born at Lake Landing, in Hyde County, North Carolina. He sang gospel in the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church and on the radio as a schoolboy. At the age of 15 he went to live with his mother in New York.

Blast from the Past is a two CD compilation album that contains re-recordings of older Gamma Ray material from the Ralf Scheepers era, with Kai Hansen singing the vocals, and remasters of more recent tracks. All instruments for old songs were also re-recorded, with new arrangements, by the then current members of the band. The songs from each era to be included in the compilation were chosen by the band's fans. Note: All tracks on CD 1 and tracks 1-3 on CD 2 are completely new recordings from the year 2000.
