The word that comes up most often when people refer to Hui 'Ohana is "magic. Formed by singer Dennis Pavao and his twin cousins Ledward and Nedward Ka'apana, Hui 'Ohana set the standard for the Hawaiian music renaissance of the 1970s. Singing a mix of traditional and contemporary songs, the trio's chemistry created a kind of alchemical reaction: they crafted gossamer harmonies that defy understanding, evoked the ephemeral aloha and just happened to perfect the art of leo ki'eki'e, or falsetto singing, at the same time

Notes

To help celebrate the Year of the Hawaiian, Hui Ohana reunited, at least for this album. Tom Moffat's liner notes provide thanks to Mike Lino and Lea Uehara, without specifying their role in the album. I assume that they are co-producers. He also cites Aulai Apoliona, whom I assume is an additional co-producer. If any of this is incorrect, the I welcome and corrections.

In 1987, to celebrate "The Year of the Hawaiian," Hui Ohana reunited for the CD entitled “Hui Ohana”. When listeners are asked to name their favorite Hui Ohana song, "Pua Carnation" is often the first song cited. However, this signature song first appeared on the 1987 album. One would never guess that the group had been apart for almost 10 years, nor that each member had felt a measure of enmity about the break-up. While this album follows the formula of the earlier albums--now middle-aged Hawaii singing old Hawaii--the songs are as fresh and vibrant as in the early albums. In addition to "Pua Carnation," Hilo One," "Kawaihae," and "Keala Mokihana" remain closely linked with the Hui Ohana, even if recorded fifteen years after the group's original album. In the mid-1980's there was a period of time when recordings were still released in three formats, so that this album was on LP, cassette, and CD formats. The CD remains in print and is available from the MELE.com web site and other music web sites. The cover artwork is a portrait of Dennis Pavao, Nedward Kaapana, and Ledward Kaapana done by Jean Charlot, making the LP a collector’s item even for someone who does not own a turntable.
