Carmen Sings Monk is a 1988 studio album by the American jazz singer Carmen McRae, focusing on the songs composed by Thelonious Monk. McRae was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, Female at the 33rd Annual Grammy Awards for her performance on this album. Get It Straight" ("Straight, No Chaser") (Thelonious Monk, Sally Swisher) – 3:58. Dear Ruby" ("Ruby, My Dear") (Swisher) – 6:01. It's Over Now" ("Well, You Needn't") (Mike Ferro) – 5:28.

Carmen McRae, a good friend of Thelonious Monk, sang 13 of his songs (two of which are also heard in different live versions) on this memorable project. Half of the lyrics are by Jon Hendricks, while the remainder were written by Abbey Lincoln ("Blue Monk"), Bernie Hanighen, Sally Swisher, or Mike Ferro. On all but the two concert performances, McRae is assisted by tenor saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Eric Gunnison, bassist George Mraz, and drummer Al Foster; Mraz's solos are particularly impressive, although everyone is in sensitive form.

This album has an average beat per minute of 110 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 78/182 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page. Tracklist Carmen Sings Monk. BPM Profile Carmen Sings Monk. The same goes for McRae, who burnishes and reshapes these great tunes subtly enough to let you know how deeply she's thought about them. Although pianist Eric Gunnison gets through way too many notes, the Al Foster-George Mraz rhythm section adds more than most of those the master gigged with, and longtime Monk saxophonist Charlie Rouse is so intimate with the material that there are times when he tops the headliner even though he never tries to upstage her.
