Il giuramento (The Oath) is an opera in three acts by the Italian composer Saverio Mercadante. The libretto, by Gaetano Rossi, is based on Victor Hugo's play Angelo, Tyrant of Padua. This is the same source as Arrigo Boito, under the pseudonym of Tobia Gorrio, was to use for his libretto for Amilcare Ponchielli's La Gioconda). The opera was first performed at La Scala, Milan on 11 March 1837 and was "quickly taken up by other theatres throughout Italy".
Its problem, historically, was that Verdi replaced Mercadante's "reform" with operatic revolution; the virtues of Il giuramento - dramatic verisimilitude, a restriction of sheer display in vocal writing, and a natural dramatic conception (the finale involves a violent confrontation between the soprano and tenor leads instead of a set piece for the soprano) - are those Verdi would exploit.

In bringing forth realism about life, Mercadante hoped to initiate a transformation towards one's own personal and spiritual existence, a change for the betterment of oneself and the well-being of others. Born in Altamura, near Bari (Apulia), Mercadante studied music in Naples and at first showed an interest in instrumental composition. The encouragement of Rossini led him to compose for the opera, where he won considerable success with his seventh such work (Elisa e Claudio), in 1821. He worked for a time in Vienna, in Madrid, in Cadiz, and in Lisbon, but re-established himself in Italy.
