But still, Phantasmagoria is a fabulous album, the culmination of all that Curved Air promised over the course of its predecessors; the yardstick by which all rock/classical hybrids should be measured. The opening "Marie Antoinette" sets the scene with lovely melody, impassioned vocal and a terrifically understated band performance which complements every syllable uttered by vocalist Sonja Kristina
Phantasmagoria is another classic from Curved Air. As I mentioned earlier, Esoteric Recordings have hit another home run and I can’t wait for the reissue of Second Album which comes out at the end of August. In the words of Lewis Carroll, This is a ‘one-ghost’ house, and you, when you arrived last summer, may have remarked a Spectre who was doing all that ghosts can do to welcome the new-comer. Exclusively for Prime members. Sample this album Artist (Sample). The centerpiece of the album however is the 19'29" epic, four part Phantasmagoria suite which was written largely by Francis Monkman with contributions by Sonja. This is a decent large-scale composition that boasts some exceptionally intricate time signatures and fantastic ensemble playing. This CD reissue by Collector's Choice Music is just OK and has a few informative liner notes that discuss some historical tidbits, along with specifics about the Phantasmagoria album itself.
