Haydn had already composed Symphony No. 99 and portions of 100 and 101 (the latter nicknamed Clock by London audiences) for a new season of 12 concerts in the Hanover Square Rooms, where an expert orchestra now included clarinets. He and Salomon co-conducted - from the harpsichord and the concertmaster's chair, respectively. His Military Symphony was the 1794 season's third and final premiere, on March 31 - Haydn 's 62nd birthday - and enjoyed a career-high success

As for the Military Symphony, the No. 100 in G major, this is a superior performance, crackling with energy. But be prepared for its very wide dynamic range particularly since, as you know, the symphony includes a good deal of percussion. I quickly realized that I needed to turn the volume control down a notch out of fear that I might blow out a speaker when the Janissary percussion kicked in, and they really DO kick in what with the two-beater bass drum part! The sound on this CD is amazingly good, particularly in the SACD format, but also in the plain stereo layer.

The Symphony No. 100 in G major, Hoboken I/100, is the eighth of the twelve London symphonies written by Joseph Haydn and completed in 1793 or 1794. It is popularly known as the Military Symphony. The nickname "Military" derives from the second movement (and the end of the finale), which features prominent fanfares written for C-trumpets and percussion effects.

Sir Thomas Beecham, 2nd Baronet, CH (29 April 1879 – 8 March 1961) was an English conductor and impresario best known for his association with the London Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic orchestras. He was also closely associated with the Liverpool Philharmonic and Hallé orchestras. From the early 20th century until his death, Beecham was a major influence on the musical life of Britain and, according to the BBC, was Britain's first international conductor. in G minor In 1908 Beecham and the New Symphony Orchestra parted company, disagreeing about artistic control and, in particular, the deputy system.
