Frank Catalano – Mighty Burner. Label: Bright Records (3) – BR501. Country: US. Released: 2006.
Frank Catalano is an American jazz saxophonist. Frank Catalano began playing saxophone at age 7. When he was 16, his right middle finger was severed while working on a car engine. Following reconstructive surgery, he forced his hands to relearn his technique. When he was 18, he toured with the rock band Santana, then signed with Delmark to record his first solo album, Cut it Out (1988), with trumpeter Ira Sullivan.
Album · 2005 · 5 Songs. Mighty Burner (Live) Frank Catalano. Listen on Apple Music.
Frank Catalano combines Coltrane- like modal techniques with old school, bar-walking r&b bravado. Mr. Catalano plays a fiery sax, with plenty of post-bop technique, but reaches emotional heights with one- and two- note repetitive phrases ala the r&b sax players of the late '40s and early '50s. His group is right with him, especially the drummer, who picks up on the fun and keeps it all loose and swinging. There is no question that Frank Catalano is a huge talent on the tenor and that this disc is a great display of that talent. His sound is massive and he takes over each track (I mean, I'm not really interested in hearing the rhythm section anyway-no disrespect intended because they totally kill throughout). Clearly, they were all out of bubble gum that night.
